It so perfectly expresses most of what I'd like to say. Other than the obvious (walking, particularly some long walks), I think the weight training I did was very helpful. I had virtually no injuries compared to what I saw many folks struggling with.

The standard recommendation for backpack weight is 10% of your body weight. That was the rule of thumb I used.

As far as footwear, this is a source of endless discussion. I bought a pair of Merrill hiking boots one size larger than I normally wear. I had a few blisters (see some of my posts) but nothing terrible.

Aside from packing light, packing clothes that are sturdy and dry quickly, etc., I would also remind folks that they are going to be wearing these clothes for 5 or 6 weeks, so pack things that you like (colors you like, things you think look good on you, etc).

I turned 60 the year I went on El Camino and my hiking poles were a life-saver (again, I think I wrote about this). I think they are particularly helpful for us older peregrinos.

The last half of the meseta was probably the hardest for me. The first half was beautiful in its own way, but there are several days on the last part that are just walking along a highway with no shade and nothing interesting to look at and the days are long because the albergues are few and far between.

The best part of El Camino is the community. You meet truly amazing people. And the hardest part is the community. Communal sleeping and showering are challenging and the lack of privacy can be wearing. Don't go unless you are prepared to be good humored about it. And the good far outweighs the bad.

For stories, reflections, etc. check my blog. The best ones are all there.

Good luck with your article and also with your walk.revrenjenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01957648263567047010noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7704463747761004532.post-85598216892609607742013-03-27T12:45:58.127-07:002013-03-27T12:45:58.127-07:00My name is Katherine, and I am emailing you with a...My name is Katherine, and I am emailing you with a couple questions regarding the Camino de Santiago.
